He played 7 State of Origin matches, winning the 1997 series, alongside 12 Test appearances and the equivalent of 184 NRL games. Ian Roberts featured in 9 State of Origin matches (11 including Super League Origins), winning 3 series and accumulating the equivalent of 194 NRL games.
The pair famously played together in the 1995 Grand Final against the Canterbury Bulldogs.
Since retiring, Spudd has built a successful media career as a commentator across SEN and Fox Sports/Fox League, while also establishing a thriving gym business.
Ian Roberts made history as the first openly gay male professional rugby league player, breaking new ground for inclusivity in the sport. During his playing career he represented clubs including the Manly Sea Eagles and South Sydney Rabbitohs, earning a reputation as one of the toughest and most athletic forwards of his era, with powerful ball-running and elite defensive work. After retiring, he transitioned into acting, appearing in major productions such as The Matrix series, as well as Australian television dramas including Water Rats, building a strong second career in film and TV.
