Last night was a truly special evening for everyone at Workers Lifestyle Group as we proudly accepted the 2026 Clubs & Community Awards Heart of the Community Award.
This recognition reflects the incredible impact that Harold Becker has had on our members, staff and the wider community over many decades. Harold’s unwavering commitment to supporting others embodies everything that community is about.
Harold Becker is the heart of the Workers’ Lifestyle Group community. A familiar and comforting presence, often seen carrying a bouquet of flowers, Harold has dedicated much of his life to caring for others, their families, their friends and anyone in need of compassion, support and connection.
Harold first became a member of Blacktown Workers Club in May 1971 and later joined the team as a staff member, serving from 1998 until his retirement in 2011. When the Club’s Welfare Officer position became vacant due to ill health, Harold immediately volunteered to take on the role, offering his time and compassion entirely of his own accord. He was officially appointed in early 2012.
His commitment to service is deeply rooted in family tradition. Harold’s father, Harold Becker Snr, was a long-serving and highly respected Board Director who played a significant role in the Club’s growth and success. For more than 60 years, the Becker name has been synonymous with dedication, loyalty and service within our Club community. Today, Harold continues that legacy, placing community, compassion and connection at the centre of everything he does.
Harold has truly lived and breathed his voluntary welfare role. Each year, he personally attends more than 100 funerals and conducts over 200 visits to hospitals, aged care facilities and private homes. For many members, particularly those without close family or support networks, Harold is often their only visitor. He provides comfort during difficult times, a listening ear when needed most and reassurance that they are never alone.
Even throughout the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, Harold remained connected to vulnerable members through regular phone calls, providing encouragement, companionship and support during periods of isolation.
In March 2025, while visiting a member at Westmead Hospital, Harold suffered a massive heart attack. Thanks to the quick actions of a volunteer at the hospital, his life was saved. True to Harold’s character, nothing could keep him away from helping others for long. Following three months of rehabilitation and medical clearance, he returned to the role he loves in June 2025.
Beyond his welfare work, Harold has volunteered extensively throughout the community. He has served as a Meals on Wheels driver, continues to support members attending the Club’s weekly Stroke Club, and plays an integral role in the Dementia Support Group, providing guidance, companionship and encouragement to participants and their families.
Harold also personally hand-delivers membership cards to elderly members and proudly presents our 50-year VIP members with their commemorative pins, always accompanied by a warm smile, kind words and a heartfelt handshake.
His impact is felt every day. The Club regularly receives calls, cards and emails from grateful members and families thanking Harold for his visits, support and countless acts of kindness. His compassion reaches far beyond the walls of our Club and enriches the broader Blacktown community.
Harold has dedicated countless hours to caring for those in need, often providing comfort and connection to people during some of life’s most challenging moments. His compassion, generosity and genuine care for others make him a truly deserving recipient of this award.
Harold Becker does not seek recognition. He simply shows up , day after day,  with empathy, dignity and unwavering care. His selfless service, resilience and humanity make him the very definition of the Heart of the Community.
On behalf of everyone at Workers Lifestyle Group, congratulations and thank you, Harold. We are incredibly proud to have you as part of our family and grateful for the difference you make every single day.
We would also like to thank ClubsNSW for recognising the importance of community service and celebrating those who dedicate themselves to helping others. These awards are a powerful reminder of the vital role registered clubs play in supporting our communities through connection, care and contribution.
Congratulations Harold Becker , a man who truly cares.
